On May 5th a very ill kitten was brought to Northwood on emergency by his owner. This kitten and his litter mates were born to his momma cat. The black DSH male (reported date of birth 2-17-19) was critically anemic with a PCV of 6. The kitten, we named Jim, was hospitalized and placed on oxygen therapy. His red cell count was not rebounding quickly enough so the decision was made to give him a blood transfusion. A xenotransusion was performed, meaning he received blood from another species, specifically our CARE puppy Leonardo (who is still up for adoption by the way). Jim received 15 ml of canine blood on May 7th and then he started to turn the corner. Jim is doing great! He is progressing through his kitten vaccines, has been neutered and micro-chipped and just needs a new home.
