On 4-23-20 a 4 year old 70 lb. male fawn and white American Bully came to Northwood Animal Hospital on emergency. His owners reported he had been vomiting for 2 days. It was unknown if he could have ingested something toxic or a foreign body may have caused an obstruction. Ceasar presented in cardiogenic shock from severe dehydration. Xrays showed a blockage in his intestines. He needed emergency surgery. The owners relinquished him for the surgery as they could not manage his ongoing care. He was started on shock dose of fluids and taken to surgery for abdominal exploratory later that day. A plastic fish toy was lodged in his proximal duodenum (close to his pancreas). That portion of the gut where the obstruction occurred was devitalized so a resection and anastamosis was performed to remove the damaged part of his intestines. He was neutered at the same time. There was concerns at first that part of his pancreas would need to be amputated due to where the blockage was but thankfully that was not the case. Ceasar did suffer from a bout of pancreatitis after his surgery that was managed medically. Ceasar has recovered well. He does have some issues with food aggression so that is a concern. He tested negative for heartworms and has been vaccinated. Now he just needs a home to call his own.
